Eight students of Sopanam school of Panchavadyam, who have completed their first phase of training in Chenda, the percussion drum of Kerala made their debut performance in the premise of Arekkavu Bhagavathi temple, Arekkavu, near Edappal in Malappuram Dt, Kerala, on 05 Feb 2017. The performance was held in the evening (5pm-7.30pm) and a total of about 40 artists participated in the traditional musical ensemble ‘Panchaari Melam’.
The eight trainees in the age group of 10- 20 yrs were undergoing training in Chenda for the last one year under Kalamandalam Hemand. Senior Artists Kadavallur Velayudhan Asan and Manoj Kalladathur also assisted in the training.
Sri Kapra Narayanan Nambuthiri, Chief Priest at Guruvayur Sreekrishna temple, veteran Pana artists Muthedathu Raman Nair and Alamkode Gangadhran Nair, Kurungattumana Vasudevan Nambuthiri, one of the Patrons of Sopanam School of Panchavadyam, Santhosh Alamkode, Director, Sopanam School of Panchavadyam were present on that occasion. In a ceremonial function held prior to the performance, the students honoured their Asan-s (trainers) and veteran artists by observing the ritual ‘Guru Dakshina’. Sopanam School of Panchavadyam honoured Muthedathu Raman Nair, the 80 yr old veteran Pana artist from Alamkode.
